A Year in Review: Learning Through the Challenges
It has been an eventful academic year that could rival a blockbuster movie; but, the opportunity to learn from the challenges has made our team even stronger.
When we began the 2019-2020 school year it was full of promise and excitement. Our team continued to work hard to deliver quality online education as registration increased by 100% from the previous year. Various contract and part-time staff were hired to accommodate this exponential growth. We have been blessed with an incredible array of talent within our team, so we started featuring teachers and developers in periodic blog posts!
There were over 400 students using our online courses as digital textbooks in traditional classrooms. Fifteen private schools across Ontario partnered with Nimbus which meant teachers were utilizing our resources to enhance in-class learning. In addition, there were various homeschool students taking advantage of our online courses with supportive parent educators and assistants. Our user-friendly platform provided the flexibility required for students with various learning abilities. Reach ahead students also continued to maximize their learning potential by moving forward in courses beyond their typical grade level. We began the year with 11 courses and developed 3 more as the school year progressed.
After having such a productive start to the new school year, no one could have predicted the uncertainty that would follow as we approached March Break. When the Covid-19 pandemic surfaced schools were among the first places to be closed. The extended break went from weeks to months and eventually closed until further notice. While this presented a challenge for the private schools we partnered with, many of our students were able to continue working from home seamlessly. Since our team primarily operates online, we were able to bless other private schools to help them adjust to remote learning.
Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to make all of our courses available for free to any Christian school to use. 11 additional schools with 430 students signed up during the Covid crisis.
Executive Director, Alex van Donkersgoed, made himself available to various Christian School administrators and teachers as they explored online options. Our team had the privilege of meeting and communicating with dozens of Christian teachers and principals to share what we know about learning online to better equip them for the challenges ahead. We give God praise for our ability to support one another despite the pandemic.
The Way Forward
As we end this very unique academic year, there is much to be thankful for and plenty to look forward to. To date, we have 900 students using our online courses and we have added many new options bringing our total to 71 courses offered in September. We will likely double and possibly triple the amount of teachers in order to support this increase.
Despite the uncertainty for the 2020-2021 academic year, we remain dedicated to providing quality online Christian education so teachers and parents can meet the needs of their students. Nimbus is ready right now to make a difference for Christian Schools, parents and students in September.
