Dynamic School Partnerships

Nimbus is blessed to work with some incredible educators from across Ontario. Our dynamic partnerships with various private schools enables us to positively impact students while effectively supporting teachers. A few weeks ago, we introduced one of the 15 schools that has been partnering with Nimbus to help students maximize their learning potential. Today we are pleased to highlight another dynamic school partnership.

Discipleship Christian Secondary School (DCSS)
As a private christian high school, DCSS is dedicated to academic excellence with a focus on spiritual growth and outreach. The school is intentionally small and takes pride in the family oriented environment. At the beginning of each school year, DCSS hosts an annual camping trip to encourage bonding between students and teachers. This tradition continues to set the tone of the school and embraces the advantage of being a tight knit community.

In 2016 DCSS began partnering with Nimbus by using the courses as an online textbook. Senior Math and Science Teacher, Kathy Sett, is pleased with the progress so far. In particular, there is a student currently enrolled in a Nimbus math course, but she remains in the classroom. The former homeschool student listens to the lesson online, with earbuds, while still having access to the teacher for additional support. Kathy says this model works well for students who work well independently, for those who struggle in the classroom or simply need the extra support. Also, since it is a very visual program, students can process the material right in front of them which minimizes the distraction. In addition, students can take advantage of having online access when they are absent from the classroom due to injury or extenuating circumstances. At DCSS, Kathy says she likes how the math courses specifically help students to understand the concepts, “Nimbus provides step-by-step solutions rather than just revealing the answer.” As an active high school teacher, she says this partnership is both time effective and efficient. Teachers have more time to help students and plan ahead with the flexibility of the video lessons.

Moving Forward
In January, DCSS will be engaging in a pilot project which will include a Physics course administered by Nimbus. The course will be delivered completely online with DCSS teachers supervising the labs. Kathy says she’s looking forward to seeing how the students progress through the video teaching, “As a teacher, it will be great to see a course being taught in a different way.” In addition, Kathy believes with the videos and hands on teachers there is a better opportunity to get a higher level of attention than other independent programs. And, since Nimbus is fully accredited, students can get the focused help they need to achieve the grades required for certain post secondary programs. This partnership continues to work well because both DCSS and Nimbus have a strong focus on academic and spiritual growth so students can truly flourish.
