Nimbus Christian Education’s first Not-A-Snow-Day

Image
Across the province today some of the communities we partner with are having snow days and students are staying home from school. Nimbus Christian Education is not. Despite bad weather our students are still able to keep learning. I’m of two minds about this. One part of me is sad, while the other is excited. I remember snow days as a child with such joy! Getting out of bed and discovering that you had this great surprise with a whole day to do nothing but play. My strongest memory comes from the day there was so much freezing rain that I pulled on my skates in the morning and skated on main street in town. I spent almost the whole day outside on my skates going everywhere because there was so much ice. But the world is different than when I grew up. I’m excited about how we can be so much more flexible about how and where our children learn. We don’t face the same limits that we did. I’m looking forward to exploring what this means for us in the future. So while I feel sad...

Avoiding Teacher & Student Burn Out

Helping students reach their maximum potential isn’t always easy; but, when you think outside of the box you can overcome any challenge. At Nimbus Christian Education we have been working hard to help educators effectively support students along their educational journey. Whether students are struggling or require an added challenge, educators need resources that are beneficial to all students. Providing extra time to complete a course or even repeating a course is critical to academic success. Allowing children to simply complete a unit without mastering the subject matter creates learning gaps. Similarly, academically advanced students who are not challenged often become stagnant, bored and working well below their potential. Students in either of these situations are equally at risk of jeopardizing their academic success and future endeavours. Depending on the size of the school, there may be an opportunity to have two or more classes run at once. Or perhaps it’s too diffi...

Meeting Educational Needs with a Christian Worldview Imagine a school that can reach students across the globe and meet their educational needs with a Christian worldview. Educators from all walks of life are looking for alternative ways to effectively teach the next generation. That’s precisely why Nimbus Christian Education has created a diverse new resource for students and educators. Since 2012, Nimbus has collaborated with Christian educators and supporters from across Ontario to provide a wide range of online educational solutions. But, why would students need to have a Christian worldview while studying math, for example. Since Christianity does not begin and end in a church building, our worldview shouldn’t either. Incorporating our faith into all aspects of our lives helps us to maintain and build upon Christian characteristics. It’s more than just learning math concepts and memorizing facts. It’s about helping our students embrace their faith in their academic journ...

It's done!

It’s done! The first of many, God willing.  We have now completed the 3 lesson series on Christian Worldview in math that we have been working on for the past 2 years. With the support of the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools we have created a group of challenging lessons for grade 12 students to think about the role of math and faith in their lives. We are excited to share this with anyone who wishes to use them. We will be integrating them into the online math courses we offer, but we wish to make them available to any teachers, students, or parent who wishes to stretch their thinking.  Access to all of the resources can be found in this Google Drive folder . All of these resources are available under a Creative Commons attribution 4.0 license . If you’d like a preview of the video lessons we’ve posted them on youtube here: (Be warned they are not easy! They are meant to challenge the student’s thinking and unsettle them.)  Lesson 1 What is Math? Lesson 2...
